Role Description

As our first in-house legal hire, reporting to the CEO, the General Counsel will serve as Givebutter's founding legal advisor, overseeing all legal, compliance, and regulatory matters. This role requires a proactive leader who can balance legal risk with business objectives, enabling Givebutter to scale responsibly and effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

Legal Strategy & Compliance: Develop and implement legal strategies that align with Givebutter's mission and business goals. Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, particularly those affecting SaaS, FinTech, and nonprofit sectors.

Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of agreements, including commercial contracts, partnerships, vendor contracts, customer terms of service, etc.

Deep fluency in commercial contracts, payments regulation (e.g., KYC/AML, card‑network rules), and data privacy (GDPR, CCPA).

Risk Management: Identify potential legal risks and develop mitigation strategies to protect the company and its stakeholders.

Corporate Governance: Advise the executive team and board on corporate governance matters, ensuring best practices are followed.

Intellectual Property: Manage and protect Givebutter's intellectual property portfolio, including trademarks and copyrights.

Partner with Product to execute global compliance and privacy obligations; act as primary Product Counsel owning Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Regulatory Affairs: Stay abreast of changes in laws and regulations that impact the company, providing timely updates and guidance to the leadership team.

Track and forecast legal budget; deliver quarterly legal‑risk report to Finance & Board.

Qualifications:

Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.

5+ years of legal experience, preferably in the technology industry and pre-series C stage companies.

Proven experience in advising executive teams and managing a broad range of legal matters.

Strong understanding of contract law, corporate governance, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance.

Excellent negotiation, communication, and leadership skills.

Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while managing multiple priorities.

Recruiter Screen: A 30-minute conversation to learn more about your background, walk through the role, and ensure mutual alignment on expectations, values, and logistics.

Hiring Manager Interview: A deeper dive into your relevant experience, skillset, and working style. This is your first opportunity to connect directly with the person who may be your future manager.

Assessment (technical or non-technical): This stage will vary based on the role. It could involve a live coding session, case study, or take-home project. Some roles may include two parts to this stage to evaluate both practical skills and problem-solving approaches

Values Interview: A conversation with team members focused on how you align with our core values and leadership principles.

References: We connect with a few folks you’ve worked closely with to get a better picture of your working style and impact.
